Kokum Dorothy’s Story
This documentary film series, part of the SSHRC-funded Survivor-Centred Visual Narratives project conducted in collaboration with UBC Cluster Co-Leads Biz (Elizabeth) Nijdam and Shannon Leddy, features interviews with Indigenous elder and Cree teacher Dorothy Visser and Métis Freelance illustrator and graphic novelist Natasha Donovan. Visser, who was taken to a residential school from her Saddle Lake, Treaty 6 territory home at age five, has been working closely with the team to transform her life narrative into a compelling visual biography, leveraging the unique ability of comics to convey complex histories and engage young readers, making her experiences of resilience more accessible to a global audience for the purposes of fostering understanding and promoting healing.
